My Wooden Hobby Horse – Chapter 1

It was a bright summer‘s day in Laxfield and Morgan had spent her first night with her Grandma and Granddad! It was the school holidays and she was staying with her Grandparents for the weekend.

Morgan's Grandparents lived on a beautiful farm in the heart of Suffolk. It was a very magical place, she had been told by her cousin George who also stays at the farm on special occasions, that he had quite an unusual adventure there too!

So on that hot Summer's day Granny Annie decided to take Morgan to the toy shop for a special treat. Morgan had worked hard for her pocket money during the summer watering the flowers and collecting the eggs from the hens.  Morgan had decided to buy a hobby horse with the money.

They arrived at the toy shop and Granny Annie said to Morgan “you have 30 pounds to spend so spend it wisely”.  Morgan looked around the shop and could not find any hobby horses so she began to climb the stairs to the next floor but again could not find what she was looking for.

Just as she was about to give up she heard a pssssssst! She looked around but there was nobody there!

“Who’s there” she said.  Morgan followed the noise to the back of shop and there behind a dolls house there was a hobby horse!

“Wow” she said and the hobby horse winked at her.  “What is your name” she asked.  “Snowy” the horse whispered “but you must not tell anybody I can talk”.  “OK” said Morgan and she picked up the hobby horse and walked down stairs with him.

Snowy was a very handsome horse with a long white mane and beautiful eyes that looked like marbles. He had a leather bridal that she could take on and off and even had a grooming brush and bag of oats round his neck. He was perfect!

Granny Annie paid for Morgan’s hobby horse and Morgan skipped out of the shop and down the lane with him. Poor Granny could hardly keep up!

When they got back to the farm Granny Annie said that Morgan could go and play with her new toy in the garden until lunch time. So that was exactly what she did.  She ran up the garden and across the bridge and into the corn field as fast as her little legs could carry her.  She sat down in the corn where nobody could see or hear her and said “Snowy can you still talk”.

“Of course I can talk” he said.  “I have been stuck behind those dolls house's for months and I think the shop keeper had forgotten about me”.  “Then you came along and rescued me”. “Rescued you” Morgan said “From what” with a puzzled face.  He was only a toy after all she thought.

“Look in my oats bag round my neck” the horse told her.  So Morgan opened the bag and it was full of gold glitter and sparkling gems.  “Now said the horse sprinkle a little on my nose and in my mane and stand back”.  Morgan did exactly what she was told; she sprinkled the golden dust over the horse and stood well back.

Suddenly before her very eyes the wind picked up and swirled around her head, Snowy’s head grew bigger and then his wooden body became wider and wider.  His wheels turned in to legs and steam began to fly out of Snowy’s nostrils. Morgan thought Snowy was going to explode so she covered her eyes and put her fingers in her ears.

As the wind calmed she slowly opened one eye, and there stood the most beautiful horse in the whole world. He had a long mane and a swishy tail.  His eyes were kind and his fur was soft.

“Thank you “he said.  “Now I am free”.

Morgan smiled but she was worried how she was going to hide Snowy he was HUGE!

The horse laughed and said “do not worry I am a magic horse, I can turn back into a hobby horse whenever others are around just groom me twice with the brush that is hanging around my neck and I will shrink in a puff of smoke but remember you must sprinkle me with gold dust at least once a day”.

“Oh great “she said, Morgan at last had her very own horse. “ Can I ride you” Morgan asked.

“Of course you can, hop on” said Snowy

He galloped over the fields and down to the lake, over the ditches and past the snakes.  He was an amazing beast, so strong and calm. Morgan looked at her watch and shouted “oh no! back to the farm”.

It was lunch time!

She climbed down and cuddled her horse and thanked him for an amazing morning.  She groomed his mane and with a puff of smoke he was a wooden hobby horse again!

“Lunch time” Granny Annie was shouting.

“Hello Granny” said Morgan, “thank you so much for my hobby horse it really is the most perfect present”.

“You are welcome Morgan” said Granny “but be sure to groom him and keep him in nice condition”.

“Oh I will” she said and turned and winked at Snowy.
